Formation of Professional Ethos of Executive Public Officials in Latvia, Denmark and Finland

2013

Keep Calm in Heated Debates: How People Perceive Different Styles of Discourse in a Scientific Debate

2021

Scientific debates are, in an epistemological sense, argumentative approaches aimed at coming to the most appropriate conclusion. However, as these debates sometimes involve interpersonal rather than content-driven attacks (e.g., an argument between scientific experts might involve personal dislike), the following question arises: How do such communication behaviors affect people’s perception of the argument? In an empirical study, we presented prospective teachers (N = 222) with a newspaper article about two scientific experts controversially discussing the pros and cons of a fictional vocabulary training program. Using a 1 × 2 between-subject design, the article contained either a neutral…

Praca ludzka w ujęciu ewangelickiej (luterańskiej) etyki teologicznej

2020

Work is undoubtedly a phenomenon which permeates the daily life of every person. It is work that enables us to make our living, determines our social status, shapes our identity and integrates us into the community. Since the very beginning, the Christian tradition has emphasized the great importance of prudent activity, which continues throughout human life. Obviously, nowadays it would be hard to talk about a social teaching common for all Christianity. Individual Churches have different approaches towards specific social and ethical matters. In this context, the subject of human work, even though it is not as controversial as issues related to bioethics or sexual ethics, should remain pr…

Soothing Lyres and epodai: Music Therapy and the Cases of Orpheus, Empedocles and David

2014

Within the frame of the role of music in ancient Greece, this short essay focuses on the soothing effects of the lyre as evidence for the use of music not only for religious or educational purposes, but also for therapeutic ones. The music of the lyre proves useful both for the performer, and for people listening to it. The main two pieces of evidence analyzed, namely Iamblichus, De Vita Pythagorica 113, and, within a different cultural context - the biblical one - 1 Samuel XVI.16, that after many centuries was taken up again by the historian Joseph Flavius (Antiquitates Iudaicae VI 166-169), well illustrate the healing effects of music.

Społeczny ethos uczonych a procesy "zurzędniczania" nauki

2018

Niniejszy artykuł stawowi wynik namysłu nad zagadnieniem społecznego ethosu uczonych w kontekście dominacji ujmowania nauki w perspektywie ilościowej. Przedstawione stanowiska dotyczące ról przypisywanych luminarzom nauki są wybraną reprezentacją podejść klasycznych nauki polskiej. Uzupełniają się zarówno w kontekście instytucjonalnym (prof. K. Twardowski), jak i społecznym (prof. F. Znaniecki). Intencją zestawienia klasycznych podejść do ról i wynikającego z nich ethosu uczonych z …
